Former CID Director Shani Abeysekara has filed a fundamental rights petition against his transfer.
The fundamental rights petition filed before the Supreme Court calls for the cancellation of his transfer and to be reinstated as the Director CID.
Abeysekara, who handled several high profile cases, was transferred and assigned as the Personal Assistant to the Southern Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police on the 21 of November.
The National Police Commission approved the transfer on a request made by the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Following the transfer, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) W Thilakarathna was appointed as the new Director of the CID.
Abeysekara led CID investigations into several cases including the disappearance of cartoonist Prageeth Ekneligoda, the assault on journalist Upali Tennekoon, the murder of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge and the disappearance of 11 youth.
