An Interview with Basil Fernando on Good Governance

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AHRC-STM-028-2015 February 06, 2015 A Statement by the Asian Human Rights Commission SRI LANKA: An Interview with Basil Fernando on Good Governance Today, (6th February 2015) the Rupavahini, TV channel in Sri Lanka, telecast a one hour interview with Basil Fernando of the Asian Human Rights Commission in its early morning programme ‘Ayubowan Suba Dawasak”- the morning talk show. The Rupavahini morning show host, Gimananda Rajapaksa interviewed Basil Fernando on many of the current issues such as the proposed constitutional reforms and whether these constitutional changes could be brought about within the 100 day programe of the new Government. He spoke about the complaints about corruption and what could be done to ensure a successful outcome of these complaints; of the meaning of good governance and what needs to be achieved in order to ensure the fulfillment of the promise relating to good governance and the final outcome of undoing of the undemocratic aspects of the 1978 Constitution including the removal of some of the powers of the executive president. Basil Fernando also explained in detail the need for police reforms in Sri Lanka in establishing a civilian policing system and on the need to establish a credible anti-corruption mechanism in the country.
